Donald Trump Tells GM Workers Their Parents Would Agree He’s Done More for Them

Donald Trump made a sweeping claim about his record with auto workers in Michigan. The president said even their parents would support his assessment.

Trump said even workers’ parents would agree with his assessment

President Donald Trump addressed employees at General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground on Monday, July 27. The White House streamed the event as Trump promoted his manufacturing record and spoke about the November midterm elections.

While criticizing United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain, Trump argued that union members had benefited more from his leadership than from anyone else. “I’ve done more for you than your parents, okay?” he told the crowd. “Your parents are good. I’m not going to knock your parents, but I have been better to you than your parents.”

Trump then insisted the workers’ parents would support his conclusion. “That I can tell you, and they would agree with me. Wherever they may be, they would agree,” he added during the speech.

The president also attacked Fain for backing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris during the 2024 election. Trump claimed the United States would not have an auto industry if Democrats had won. However, Fain still leads the UAW, despite Trump’s suggestion that someone had fired him.

Reuters reported that Trump used the General Motors appearance to promote tax cuts, investment and job creation while rallying MAGA voters ahead of the midterms. He also called his Democratic opponents “communists” during the campaign-style address, which GM CEO Mary Barra attended.

Trump credited his 25% tariff on imported cars and light trucks with strengthening domestic production. He cited a 20% increase in General Motors’ truck and SUV output this year. People noted, however, that federal employment data show a national decline in motor vehicle and parts jobs since the beginning of Trump’s second term.

The parents’ remark became one of several attention-grabbing moments from the Michigan event. Trump also gave a one-word response to an Epstein heckler, repeated his unusual pronunciation of Mexico and offered a strange update on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
