The group posted a statement online, which TMZ reported. It said Wells wore only swim trunks when searchers found him. The group also denied telling United Cajun Navy, Ben Crump, or Wells’ family that he was fully clothed.
“Did Attorney Crump lie about UCN? Yes,” the group wrote. It added that it never spoke with Crump and never shared any information that Wells was fully clothed. The United Cajun Navy also addressed its president, Todd Terrel. He had used the phrase “fully clothed” in an earlier interview.
The group said people misunderstood his wording. He meant that Wells was not naked and wore swim trunks. The Nolan Wells swim trunks debate, the group explained, came down to one point: he wore trunks and nothing more.
They also accused critics of turning the wording into a distraction. They called the back-and-forth a “press conference blunder.” Crump released his own statement Saturday. He said the dispute never aimed to attack anyone.
Crump wanted to learn what happened to Nolan on Horn Island on July 4. He also vowed to stand by the truth, no matter who it implicated or cleared, and he demanded full transparency in the Nolan Wells investigation.
Searchers found Wells’ body two days after he went missing. Authorities said he drowned. His family and Crump disputed that account. They pointed to an independent autopsy that noted a possible head injury.
