Emmy Rossum says family now shapes many of the choices she makes in life and work. The actor recently reflected on raising her children in New York. She also shared how motherhood has impacted her approach to new projects. Rossum discusses her family and career in a new interview.
Emmy Rossum opens up about motherhood, leaving Hollywood behind, and balancing family with her acting career
In an interview with PEOPLE, Rossum and her husband, Sam Esmail, always wanted to be on the East Coast. She recalled asking him, “Do you want to live in L.A.?” before they decided on New York. Rossum added, “He’s from Jersey, and I’m from New York, so it feels very right that we’re in the city.” The couple met during the filming of Comet in Los Angeles in 2014.
Rossum and Esmail now live in New York with their 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. She said, “We’ve been able to create a life for our kids in New York that’s grounded.” Rossum also said her kids see a movie set as a place where there are “lollipops” and “lots of chairs to sit in.” She said that motherhood has not affected her ambition, but she is being more careful in the selection of projects because she does not want to spend too much time away from her children.
Rossum stated she is thrilled with her new Hulu crime drama, Furious, in which she stars as FBI agent Alice. She told PEOPLE, “I’m interested in people that exist in a moral gray area.” After leaving Shameless in 2019, she focused on her production company, Composition 8, and continued building projects she loves. She also states that she ignores outside opinions and remains focused on her goals.
Despite it all, Rossum still rides the bus, still visits from her youth, still lives a normal family life in New York. She balances work with spending time with her mother, doing laundry, and caring for her children. Additionally, Rossum remarked, “I am excited to not know what’s coming,” as she transitions into the next phase of her career.
