Tiger Woods’ son Charlie Woods came within one shot of extending his U.S. Junior Amateur run before a split-second interruption changed everything. A fan’s iPhone camera shutter clicked during his backswing, and the costly mistake ended the 17-year-old’s tournament hopes.

According to The Athletic, Charlie entered a 14-for-2 playoff after shooting rounds of 76 and 70 during stroke play at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Only two golfers earned the final spots in the 64-player match-play bracket.
Charlie faced a pivotal par-5 hole during the playoff. He attempted to reach the green in two shots before lining up a difficult chip from thick rough. During his third shot, an iPhone camera shutter sounded in the middle of his backswing.
The distraction immediately affected the shot. Charlie chunked the chip, faced a long birdie attempt from off the fringe, and eventually recorded a bogey. An amateur video later captured his reaction. He turned toward the crowd, dropped his club, and said, “Really, dude?”
The bogey ended his tournament. Eli Wessel of Indianapolis and Hudson Kutchma of Westfield, Indiana, claimed the final two match-play positions instead.
Charlie entered the championship under plenty of attention because he continued following his father Tiger Woods’ path through junior golf. PEOPLE previously reported that Tiger coached his son with a different approach than his own father, Earl Woods. A source told the publication in 2020, “Tiger loves spending time with Charlie on the golf course, but he has a completely different vibe than Earl had while working with him.”
Charlie also continued building his own résumé. He committed to Florida State University earlier this year and recently caddied for close friend Miles Russell during U.S. Open final qualifying in Florida.
The tournament marked Charlie’s third appearance in the prestigious junior championship. He shot 82 and 80 in 2024 before improving to 80 and 74 in 2025. He will receive one final opportunity to compete in the event next year.
Tiger, meanwhile, won the U.S. Junior Amateur three consecutive times before adding three straight U.S. Amateur titles, setting a standard few golfers have ever matched.
