William Shatner and Melanie Shatner reveal how their simultaneous cancer diagnoses strengthened their bond
In an interview with PEOPLE, Melanie remembered a night during her chemotherapy when she felt scared and called her father. She told Shatner, “I think I’m dying,” and 15 minutes later, he was at her home. She described the actor as giving her a “daddy bear hug.” Shatner told her that the experience would become a memory and that she would overcome it.
In July 2022, Melanie found a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer. Cancer had spread to her lymph nodes in her chest, and she went through chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and radiation treatments. In June 2023, Shatner learned he had stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain. He was treated with immunotherapy, and he kept working while being treated.
In late 2024, doctors were able to certify both Melanie and Shatner with no signs of cancer. Shatner, 95, said he feels grateful for his family and the little things in life. Melanie said overcoming cancer changed her outlook and helped her feel less afraid. The duo will also start a podcast titled “No Time but Now” on July 29, which will feature discussions about health and survival stories.
Shatner admitted that he is grateful for the good care he received while battling cancer. Doctors who worked with him and Melanie credited newer treatments for helping them reach better outcomes. The actor is still active with future books and music releases. He also likes spending time with his expanding family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Melanie said her father remains the family’s “patriarch” and called him the “Big Kahuna.” Shatner said that he doesn’t concentrate on fame or awards, but that helping others leaves a lasting impression. Their experiences together have had an impact on their perception of life and family. Now, the father and daughter duo hope that their story will inspire people who are battling health issues.
