Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has advised investigators of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance to conduct searches in the desert for the remains.
As the investigation enters 6 months, Coffindaffer drew from her experience to suggest this move.

According to RadarOnline, a retired FBI agent has asked investigators to “search that desert” for hopes of finding Nancy Guthrie’s remains. The former special agent compared Guthrie’s case to Thelma Gaston, who “was a millionaire who went missing 40 years ago when she was 80.” Reportedly, the elderly lady had gone out to find her cat and never returned home.
“Her remains were finally found near Sugarloaf Mountain in a desolate area,” Coffindaffer said. She noted that a passerby discovered Gaston’s shallow grave while collecting firewood in Riverside County in 1981.
However, severe decomposition made it difficult for authorities to identify the body. In May, investigators identified Gaston’s remains using “investigative genetic genealogy, in conjunction with dental records.” The breakthrough came 45 years after her disappearance. Authorities announced the discovery on July 15. The development prompted Coffindaffer to call for more extensive searches for Guthrie.
The former FBI agent urged authorities to thoroughly search the desert near Nancy Guthrie’s home in Tucson, Arizona. Guthrie reportedly disappeared from the property on February 1. “This is exactly why searches need to be conducted for Nancy,” Coffindaffer said. Unless they know where she is, search that desert,” she wrote.
While Guthrie’s case still has no confirmed breakthrough, authorities secured a conviction in Thelma Gaston’s case. A court convicted her “paramour,” Lawrence Remsen, of second-degree murder in December 1983.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, reportedly disappeared from her home on February 1. Sheriff Chris Nanos and the FBI are still investigating the case with no fresh leads yet. Nanos previously said that the investigation is ongoing and hinged on digital evidence and public tips. Guthrie’s family announced a $1 million dollar reward for any information leading to discovery or arrest of the perpetrator.
