Sarah Ferguson has spent decades surprising royal watchers, but one of her most unusual traits has nothing to do with palace protocol. Instead, it was a lifelong food preference that even her daughter, Princess Eugenie, admitted she had never been able to understand.
The revelation resurfaced as interest in the York family continued to grow following Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice’s return to more public royal appearances. While the family’s eating habits may seem like a small detail, Eugenie’s comments offered a rare glimpse into life behind closed palace doors.
Princess Eugenie explains why Sarah Ferguson’s lifelong dislike of chocolate has always puzzled her
RadarOnline reported that Ferguson’s surprising dislike of chocolate first became public during a 2021 interview, where Eugenie shared one of her favorite family anecdotes. Reflecting on her mother’s taste in food, the princess said, “She doesn’t like chocolate, which I’ve always found weird, but loves mackerel, which I’ve also always found weird!”
The outlet noted that Ferguson’s preference had become something of a running joke within the family. A source claimed, “Sarah has never pretended to enjoy foods simply because people expect her to. She has always had very individual tastes, and her dislike of chocolate has become one of those family stories everyone knows. Even those closest to her still joke about it.”
The report added that Eugenie had never stopped teasing her mother about it. According to the insider, “Eugenie has always teased her mother over her dislike of chocolate because most people cannot imagine turning it down. Sarah has never changed her mind, though, and she happily reaches for savory food instead. It is one of those quirks that have become part of her personality.”
The publication also revisited Ferguson’s eating habits during a stay at Austria’s Mayrlife wellness retreat following intense media scrutiny surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and the controversy involving her former husband, Prince Andrew. According to the report, she reportedly chose to eat privately in her suite rather than join other guests and ordered room service featuring dishes such as grilled chicken and bresaola with mozzarella as part of the retreat’s wellness program.
The outlet pointed out that Ferguson was hardly the only royal with distinctive food preferences. The late Queen Elizabeth II reportedly enjoyed kippers for breakfast, while Princess Anne was said to prefer bananas only after their skins had turned almost entirely black. King Charles, who had long been known for skipping lunch, reportedly began eating half an avocado during the day on medical advice as he continued cancer treatment.
The report also noted that Eugenie and Princess Beatrice recently stepped back into the spotlight together by attending their cousin Peter Phillips’ wedding to Harriet Sperling in the Cotswolds.
