Kelly Rowland Wants to Bring a Disco Icon to the Big Screen

Kelly Rowland dropped another major hint that a long-rumored Donna Summer biopic could finally be gaining momentum. The singer and actress admitted she would love to portray the late disco legend, adding fresh fuel to years of fan speculation.

The idea has circulated for years, thanks in part to the striking resemblance between Kelly and the Queen of Disco. Now, the former Destiny’s Child star has suggested fans may not have to wait much longer for an official update.

Kelly Rowland believes Donna Summer deserves a powerful biopic

According to Us Weekly, Kelly said she had her sights set on playing Donna Summer. “I would love nothing more than that role. That’s all I can say,” she said while promoting Lysol’s HERE for Healthy Schools: Quality Time Off Grant. “That’s all I can say for now.”

Kelly also teased that progress may already be happening behind the scenes. “I’m hoping you won’t be waiting long,” she told the outlet, adding, “All of us have our fingers crossed, toes crossed. We’re just totally crossed out.”

Fans had already started buzzing after Kelly shared a June Instagram photo carousel that included an image of Donna. The latest comments marked her strongest indication yet that the long-discussed project could be moving forward.

According to the publication, Kelly first embraced the idea publicly years ago. After dressing as Donna for Halloween in 2019, she later agreed during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that “it is time” for a film celebrating the disco icon’s life.

Momentum grew again in 2024 when Donna’s daughter, Brooklyn Sudano, confirmed that a biopic was in development. Speaking with Us Weekly, Sudano said she and Kelly had discussed the possibility, adding, “Kelly and I are friends, so of course we have [spoken about it]. I love Kelly. She is the best. So talented, so beautiful. We hear you.”

While Kelly kept details about the potential film under wraps, she told Us Weekly she had “so many things in the fire right now” but wanted to keep them close to her chest.

Away from Hollywood, Kelly remained focused on family life with sons Titan and Noah and her partnership with Lysol. She also shared that she tucked “a little cross” into her children’s backpacks and prayed over them before school, calling it one of the ways she kept them “covered and protected.”
