Anthony Hopkins Embarks on New Career at 88 With Classical Music Album

Anthony Hopkins has one of the most legendary acting careers in Hollywood with over 150 acting credits in 60 years. Now, the Oscar-winning actor is making a comeback to the hobby that came long before his acting career. The 88-year-old star will soon release a new collection of his original classical compositions. He says, writing has been a part of his life for decades.

The Oscar winner fulfills a lifelong dream with his musical debut

Anthony Hopkins has signed with Decca Classics label and will be releasing Life Is a Dream on Aug. 21. According to Decca Classics, this album includes original compositions recorded with Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Cellist Gregorio Nieto and pianist Sergio Tiempo also appear on the recordings. The album covers music from various periods of Hopkins’ life, and is based on his emotional storytelling which he developed as an actor.

Hopkins was born in Port Talbot, Wales and began his piano studies when he was just 4 years old. Soon he learned works by Beethoven and Chopin, while his mother, Annie, wished he would be a concert pianist. Hopkins said music was his first dream and that he has composed throughout his life. He added that signing with Decca was the honor of a lifetime and thanked Dudamel for bringing new meaning to every note.

Bracken Road is the first single from 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra. The piece is inspired by Hopkins’ childhood experiences in Margam, South Wales. The album was recorded at Alexandra Palace in London, in April 2026. Hopkins also thanked the Philharmonia Orchestra, Gregorio Nieto and Sergio Tiempo for helping bring his music to life.

Back in 2012, Hopkins told NPR he wanted to be a composer before the switch to acting. Fans also remember him playing piano for his late cat, Niblo, during the pandemic.
