Savannah Guthrie Misses Second Straight Today Show Without Explanation

Savannah Guthrie missed a second consecutive broadcast of Today, leaving viewers without any explanation from NBC about her absence. The veteran morning show anchor was replaced by different co-hosts on back-to-back days as speculation continued to swirl online.

Laura Jarrett joined Craig Melvin on Thursday, July 9, after Sheinelle Jones filled in the previous day. While Guthrie has previously stepped away from the show for work commitments and family matters, the network did not address her latest absence on air.

Savannah Guthrie has been absent from Today for two consecutive broadcasts, and NBC has not explained why

Us Weekly reported that Guthrie, 54, previously missed time earlier this summer while attending pre-production meetings for her upcoming NBC Wordle game show. She also returned to Today in April after taking a two-month leave following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie.

Nancy, 84, was reported missing in Arizona after she was last seen on January 31. During the investigation, multiple ransom letters were sent to media outlets, while the FBI released surveillance images and video of an unidentified individual outside her home. Authorities and the Guthrie family also offered rewards for information.

Before returning to Today, Guthrie became emotional while speaking about the case.

“Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony. And to think of what she went through. I wake up every night in the middle of the night. Every night. And in the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable,” Guthrie said, per the outlet.

She also expressed guilt over the ordeal, adding, “It’s just too much to bear to think that I brought this to her bedside… I’m so sorry, Mommy.”

Weeks later, after news emerged that one ransom letter referenced Nancy’s death, Guthrie again appealed for help during Today.

“Somebody knows something. We are in agony. We cannot be in peace,” she said.

Guthrie later told Arizona’s KOLD News 13 that the investigation had brought “five months of agony and unending trauma” for her family. She also thanked the people of Tucson, along with the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, for continuing their efforts to bring her mother home.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told KOLD News 13 that the investigation remained active, explaining that detectives were continuing to examine every possible lead, including genealogy evidence, to identify anyone who might be connected to the case.
