Following Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization three weeks ago and growing speculation about his health, his wife, Elaine Chao, has finally addressed the concerns. She released a statement on her husband’s condition and addressed her controversial trip to China.
Elaine Chao defended her long-planned visit after critics questioned its timing while Mitch McConnell remained hospitalized
In a July 7 statement, a spokesperson for Chao, who previously served as secretary of labor under George W. Bush and secretary of transportation in Trump’s first administration, said, “as per Gulf Coast News, “The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family’s philanthropic endeavors. During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the US ambassador. The Senator’s health did not warrant an immediate return to the US.” At present, she has no formal role in government.
According to People, three days after McConnell’s office confirmed his hospitalization for an undisclosed condition, Chao traveled to Beijing on June 17 to meet with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. She has reportedly returned to the US, according to The Daily Beast, but her spokesperson declined to say when she arrived back.
Marjorie Taylor Greene accused the senator’s wife of being a “possible Communist spy.” MTG told TMZ in a video that McConnell’s wife traveled to China and met with the country’s vice president shortly after his medical emergency. She questioned why a woman would leave her husband’s side while he was “dead or dying” in the hospital.
According to ABC News 4, McConnell, whose current term is expected to conclude in January 2027, has faced several health concerns in recent years. These include a March 2023 fall resulting in a concussion and broken ribs. He also froze mid-sentence during a later news conference, and reports said he had suffered two more falls earlier that year.
