Serena Williams is not ready to step away from professional tennis yet. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has now shifted her focus after Wimbledon. A knee injury had halted her comeback earlier than expected. However, retirement is not on the table yet.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion shuts down retirement speculation, shifting her focus to the US Open
Williams’ coach, Rennae Stubbs, has shared an encouraging update this week at Wimbledon, as reported by People. She confirmed that the tennis legend wants to keep competing in tournaments. The US Open is Williams’s next target now. Everything now depends on her timely recovery.
“Her intention is to keep playing; the US Open as well,” Stubbs said. She is feeling optimistic about Williams’ rehabilitation progress. The coach is hopeful that her training will resume within weeks now. Her recovery is the immediate priority for now.
Williams had injured her right knee while playing Wimbledon’s first-round match. She still pushed the contest into three sets. However, the injury forced another tough decision. Williams had to withdraw from doubles alongside her sister, Venus Williams.
“She did whisper to me, ‘I would have won if I had a good knee,’” Stubbs revealed. The coach has praised Williams’ pre-tournament performance. She said Williams had defeated strong opponents while practising. Those performances boosted her confidence for Wimbledon.
Williams shared the news about her setback on Instagram. She called returning to the Grand Slam competition a gift. The tennis star expressed her disappointment at missing the doubles. Serena wrote a long caption which included “The good news is my knee shouldn’t swell or collect that much fluid again. The bad news is that, as hard as I tried, I just wasn’t able to get it ready for doubles.” She said her knee just wasn’t ready.
Doctors have been monitoring Williams’ recovery for future tournaments. She may seek a wildcard entry before the US Open begins. Cincinnati and Toronto have the highest possibilities of witnessing her comeback in the game. Her schedule depends entirely on her medical progress.
