Penélope Cruz Says She’s ‘Still Learning’ in Marriage

Penélope Cruz recently opened up about her marriage to Javier Bardem. The actress looked back at their evolving relationship after being married for 16 years. She admitted that despite knowing him for decades, she is still learning about him. Her introspection garnered attention and offered a refreshing perspective on long-term relationships.

The actress opens up about the shifting dynamics, creative trust, and lessons learned after 16 years with her fellow star

The Oscar winner recently had a heartfelt discussion with People about her relationship with Bardem. She shared her perspective on marriage and evolving relationships. Cruz believes that when one cannot understand oneself, then how can one completely understand one’s partner? This mindset has helped strengthen her bond with her husband over time.

“I feel like I’m still learning [in my relationship], you know?” Cruz said. “And I am with somebody that I’ve known for 33 years.” She reflected on how relationships tend to evolve. Her reflection accompanied the promotions for her upcoming film, The Invite.

“I really know that person, but it’s like, is there a day when you really get to know yourself?” Cruz asked. “No. So the same with your partner.” The actress believes staying curious about each other is the key to lasting relationships. She feels personal growth is an ongoing journey.

Cruz and Bardem first met while filming Jamón Jamón in 1992. They reunited while shooting for Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008. They started dating soon after. In 2010, the couple got married and now has two children, Leo and Luna.

The actress has, in the past, explained why they rarely do shared projects now. She believed that protecting their marriage was a priority over anything else. “Obviously, we can’t choose parts just for logistical reasons,” Cruz previously explained. “In fact, it’s not something we want to do that often.”

This approach has continued to support their relationship for decades now. The couple is all set to celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary this July.
