Williams, 46, was back at Wimbledon in a mixed doubles event with Kevin Krawietz on July 3. The pair faced Lloyd Glasspool and Tereza Mihalikova at Wimbledon. The American star was a wildcard entry into the event, offering a treat to her fans. However, they lost 6-4, 6-4 to the No. 7 pair, Glasspool and Mihalikova.
Soon after the loss, Williams failed to appear for a press conference, which was eventually understood as she didn’t want to comment on the match results.
However, her decision to skip media appearances might lead to a massive fine. The tennis star might face a fine of up to £37,000 ($50,000) as per the Grand Slam rule book.
Williams’ decision came shortly after Serena Williams was involved in a similar incident. Last week, Serena Williams lost in a singles match against Maya Joint. In a similar incident, she did not appear at post-match press conferences, which led to criticism from fans. Fans were waiting to see both sisters on July 4, though Serena pulled out due to injury.
According to the rulebook, unless it is reasonably similar to an injury or illness, the players on both the winning and losing sides have to appear in front of the media post-match. This includes walkovers unless extended or otherwise modified by the Referee for good cause at events.
Though Serena later provided her explanation for skipping the media, according to The Mirror. There is no statement from Venus Williams or her agent regarding her familiar to appear for the press conference. Tournament officials have not made any public comment regarding the fine.
