Madonna has spent decades being one of music’s biggest trendsetters, but even the Queen of Pop admits she once felt a little star-struck herself. The singer recently revealed there was one fellow pop icon who inspired both admiration and a touch of jealousy.
The surprising confession came during a chat with Graham Norton ahead of the release of her upcoming album Confessions II. And the lucky recipient of Madonna’s praise was none other than Kylie Minogue.
Madonna confesses to being ‘jealous’ of Kylie Minogue
During her appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Madonna reflected on the famous rhinestone T-shirt she wore with Kylie Minogue’s name across it at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards. Explaining how the shirt came about, she said, “I was in my Western mode, rhinestoning everything, and I was trying to think of singers that I’m slightly in love with. And so naturally, I thought of Kylie and had a T-shirt made of her,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
Minogue, who joined Madonna for part of the interview, admitted she was stunned when she first saw the tribute. “I don’t know what I did, probably just stopped shy of fainting. It was amazing,” she recalled.
Madonna then shared the unexpected reason behind her admiration. “I was actually a little bit jealous of you,” she told Minogue, according to Entertainment Weekly. When Graham Norton asked why, Madonna laughed and replied, “’Cause she was so cute.”
The singer even joked that her then-husband, filmmaker Guy Ritchie, may have played a role in those feelings. “I think my ex-husband at the time had a crush on her. I was like, ‘I’ll never be as beautiful as Kylie!’” Madonna said.
The conversation also reignited speculation that Minogue could appear on Madonna’s upcoming album, Confessions II. When Norton asked whether the rumors were true, the pair simply exchanged knowing smiles before Madonna teased, “Why do you have to know everything? You’re very nosy.”
The two artists have shared the stage before, performing together during Madonna’s 2024 Celebration Tour. Looking back on the collaboration, Minogue said, “What a moment. I absolutely loved that.”
Whether a studio collaboration is actually on the way remains under wraps. But if Madonna’s latest comments are any indication, the mutual admiration between the two pop legends is very real.
