Donald Trump appeared on Fox & Friends and jokingly referenced wanting to “get to heaven,” while poking fun at media speculation about his health. The president has publicly wondered whether he’d be able to make it up in the clouds.
Cameras caught Vice President J. D. Vance laughing along with the comment, a moment that quickly spread across social media and was picked up by entertainment outlets.
J.D. Vance reacts to Donald Trump’s remarks about going to heaven
This humorous exchange has put the spotlight on Trump and Vance’s relationship with God. The president has previously been unsure whether he would be allowed into heaven. On one of his Fox and Friends appearances, he said, “I want to try and get to heaven, if possible. I’m hearing I’m not doing well.”
The audience immediately reacted with laughter, while Vice President Vance’s reaction drew maximum attention. The lighthearted moment was drawn up in an interview with USA Today, where Vance was asked whether Trump had ever sought his advice on religious matters. Vance replied, saying, “No, he hasn’t. I mean, I don’t know what I would say,” adding that Vance himself was a “very imperfect Christian in my own life.”
Vance, 41, considered the president’s comment a casual joke and not a serious admission of his religious views. He said, “I also think that, like all of us, he’s thinking about his own relationship with God, his own faith. He is a person of faith. He doesn’t talk about it a lot publicly, but he does believe in God.”
Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019 and has frequently described his faith as a major influence on his views about family, community, and public service. Trump identifies as a non-denominational Christian and has long courted evangelical voters, making faith a recurring theme in his political messaging.
