Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy after singling out CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins during an Oval Office press event. The president’s comments quickly drew criticism from Anderson Cooper, who argued that Collins was targeted in a way male reporters rarely are.
What began as a question about a proposed Department of Justice fund reportedly turned into a personal critique of the veteran White House reporter. Rather than addressing the topic at hand, Trump shifted his attention to Collins, making remarks about her appearance and demeanor in front of the press corps.
Once again Donald Trump insults a woman and Anderson Cooper is calling him out
During the June 3 exchange, Trump reportedly described CNN as a “corrupt organization” before turning his attention to Collins, who had not even asked the question being discussed.
According to a clip shared by Forbes, he called Collins a “young, beautiful woman” before criticizing her for not smiling and claiming he saw “hatred” in her eyes.
The comments became a major talking point later that evening on “Anderson Cooper 360.” Cooper pushed back against the remarks and questioned why female journalists often face scrutiny that their male counterparts do not.
“That doesn’t happen to men,” Cooper said during the segment.
The CNN anchor noted that Collins had been standing among several male reporters who also weren’t smiling, yet she was the only person singled out. He added that he had no interest in putting Collins on television to discuss the incident because she had “actual work to do.”
Cooper’s criticism didn’t stop there. He argued that the episode reflected a pattern in which women are often judged on their appearance rather than their reporting.
Political commentator Tara Palmeri echoed that sentiment during the discussion. She suggested the remarks reflected a common tactic used to diminish powerful women by focusing on their looks instead of their work.
The incident also wasn’t the first clash between Trump and Collins. Earlier this year, he reportedly criticized the CNN correspondent during an Oval Office exchange about Jeffrey Epstein-related documents, again referencing her facial expressions while challenging her reporting.
Former Trump administration official Sarah Matthews later weighed in on the controversy, calling the remarks “disgusting.” She also claimed Collins had long been one of the reporters the Trump White House found most challenging because of her persistent questioning.
