Seth Meyers blasted Republican Senator Ted Cruz on the ‘A Closer Look’ segment of his show for his controversial comment about gas prices.
He launched into a monologue, saying, “You don’t think people care about high gas prices? Do you not have a dad?” His “dad joke” was a response to Ted Cruz’s recent remarks that rising gas prices would have little impact on the midterm elections. Citing the conflict with Iran, Cruz argued that national security would matter more to voters than higher prices at the pump.

Meyers continued to say that he has a dad who gets furious every time gas prices rise. “When gas goes over $4 a gallon, he blows up my phone like an angry girlfriend,” the NBC host joked about his father. “But one thing that hasn’t changed is people care about the price of gas during elections! If you need more data on that, just ask Steve Kornacki,” Meyers said about the NBC poll analyst.
Cruz’s prediction may be tested by economic concerns, including a 40% rise in gas prices since February 2026, as reported by Reuters. Unlike Cruz’s views, political analysts often refer to gas prices as a “kitchen-table” issue that voters encounter in day-to-day life, which may be a strong predictor of voter dissatisfaction.
Meyers’s attack on the Republican Senator comes at a disturbing time in the late-night television segment. Recently, Donald Trump abetted the cancellation of the beloved Stephen Colbert show. While CBS and parent company Paramount have maintained that the cancellation was a financial decision unrelated to the show’s content, widespread speculation persists about the real reason behind the move. Some critics have linked it to Paramount’s changing ownership structure and its perceived ties to allies of President Donald Trump.
Meyers’ show remains one of the few late-night programs that continue to regularly target Trump and his allies, alongside hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, and Jon Stewart.
