First daughter Ivanka Trump is facing public backlash after publicly praising a massive $1.5 billion luxury project in the Mediterranean, backed by her husband Jared Kushner’s private equity firm, Affinity Partners.
Trump’s outspoken praise of the vision and ongoing work on Sazan Island has had negative reactions from liberals, who think that Ivanka is being “tone deaf” and is detached from current economic realities under President Donald Trump.
Ivanka Trump branded “tone deaf” after allegedly bragging about $1.5 billion private island as grocery prices surge
Ivanka Trump revealed in a podcast that finding and developing the private island is one of the biggest achievements in her career. She described the exhilarating journey as, “Over the course of many years, we developed the opportunity to help realize its potential and transform it, but with a lot of restraint and care because the land is so beautiful that, really, the architecture has to be fully integrated into it, almost rise from it.”
However, social media users jumped online to call out Ivanka Trump’s extravagant project, citing that it is incompatible with the economic realities plaguing America. The country is facing an unprecedented rise in the price of groceries, which have risen by 2.9% year-on-year in April. Additionally, consumer inflation has risen to its highest annual rate in three years.
“This stolen money from the American taxpayers, how about building houses for the homeless veterans instead,” wrote an irked user. Another added, “Why in the hell would she throw this in the face of Millions of less fortunate people in a failing economy.. Beyond out of touch.”
Environmental groups have voiced concerns over the development’s potential effect on the island’s ecosystem, while also questioning the transparency surrounding its approval process. The concerns come on the back of previous controversies around Trump’s business dealings, especially Chinese trademark approvals that coincided with her role at the White House.
