Spencer Pratt is trying to avoid labels amid MAGA controversy in the Los Angeles mayoral race, ahead of the June 2, 2026, election. The former reality-TV-star-turned-politician wrote on Instagram, “There’s no R next to my name, there’s no D next to my name.”
Spencer Pratt dodges a MAGA label as he runs for LA Mayor as an Independent
The 42-year-old, best known as the star of The Hills, announced his candidacy in January 2026 and is running against Mayor Karen Bass, who has served as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles since 2022.
Initially, Pratt confirmed that he is a registered Republican and explained why he is one. He said, “When I was a hated reality star, I got so many death threats, I had so much security and police, and what did they tell me to do? Get a gun. I know people don’t like guns, but LA was dangerous if you’re hated, so I got a gun, my wife got a gun.” He further detailed that he and his wife, Heidi Montag, needed concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits. “The only people who supported a CCW were the Republicans.”
However, on May 23, he posted, “Everyone is trying to claim me for their tribe. There’s no R next to my name, there’s no D next to my name. I’m not part of a political party because I hate politicians. I’m just Spencer, husband to Heidi, father to Ryker and Gunner, and I’m a pissed-off Angeleno who loves my city and is fed up with what corrupt politicians have done to her.”
His opponents, including Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, have called him a MAGA Republican in campaign ads, according to OK! Magazine. President Donald Trump also backed him during a recent press conference at the White House on May 20. He said, “I’d like to see him do well. He’s a character.”
