Nightcrawler: Jake Gyllenhaal on Success at Any Cost

One of the most acclaimed movies to come out of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival finally hits theaters this weekend. Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an entrepreneurial member of the lost generation who gets a movie camera and starts filming car crash victims and crime scenes to sell to local Los Angeles news stations, and begins manipulating his subjects to make more money.

It’s an impressive star turn for Jake Gyllenhaal, who turns in a creepy performance that’s just this shy of a Batman villain. CraveOnline interviewed the star of Nightcrawler to find out where this role came from, and it turns out it came from the script, the mannerisms of Nightcrawler writer/director Dan Gilroy, and… jogging?

Jake Gyllenhaal also explains how he feels about the job market that’s forcing a young generation to make money any way possible, the diminishing value of real journalism, and the dark side to ambition.

Nightcrawler co-stars Rene Russo (Thor) and Bill Paxton (“Big Love”), and hits theaters on October 31, 2014.
