Martha Stewart has addressed the backlash over her Halloween costume, following criticism online. In her latest Instagram post, the lifestyle mogul apologized for the costume.
Stewart shared a statement on Instagram on Sunday by posting a written message on the Notes app. In the message, Stewart admitted her earlier response had not gone far enough. “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” the 85-year-old wrote. “I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”
The apology followed backlash over a since-deleted Halloween photo Stewart posted on October 31. The image showed her wearing torn jeans, a cream cardigan, and a black knit cap. She also held a handwritten sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” Her two dogs also appeared in the image. The businesswoman had taken down the image after it drew criticism online.
Why Martha Stewart’s Halloween costume sparked criticism from fans
According to TMZ, the image appeared in an Instagram carousel promoting her QVC candles for Halloween. The post generated significant outrage across social media platforms, with many accusing Stewart of mocking people who are unhoused. The reaction centered on her wealth and the timing, as many Americans face economic struggles.
“Rich celebrities mocking poor people and their struggles is so dystopian. This is disgusting,” @Rockstar82vansh wrote on X. @GeriPerna wrote, “Martha Stewart is worth an estimated $400 million, yet thought dressing as a homeless person for Halloween was funny. It makes you wonder how these wealthy elites really view the rest of us.”
In an earlier statement to People, the writer said the costume was meant to “bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness.” She added that she was “distressed” that it “has offended people, which was never my intention.”
Reactions to her subsequent apology remained mixed. Some followers welcomed her willingness to take responsibility, while others defended her and questioned the backlash.
