Simon Pegg is taking on a new and unusual project focused on a global technology disaster. The Mission: Impossible star is set to lead the cast of My Phone Died, a dark comedy in which smartphones begin exploding around the world, leaving a small group of survivors to figure out what comes next.
According to Variety, the film also brings together Mark Duplass and Haley Joel Osment. Instead of focusing on traditional end-of-the-world action, the story follows a diverse group of individuals whose lives are abruptly altered when their phones become lethal.
Hannah Leder and Alexandra Kotcheff are writing and directing the movie. Both filmmakers will also appear in the cast, with production currently scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
What else do we know about My Phone Died with Simon Pegg?
The story follows five unlikely survivors after smartphones start exploding across the globe. Pegg plays Gus, a Hollywood agent who manages to escape the disaster. Duplass plays one of Gus’ self-absorbed clients, who does not escape the disaster. Osment plays a recovering alcoholic who works as a social media influencer. Kotcheff portrays Francis, a woman who leaves her Amish community and becomes involved with Osment’s character. Leder plays Lillie, a pregnant and agoraphobic aspiring actress. The group must find a way forward as the world around them falls apart.
The film marks Leder and Kotcheff’s second feature collaboration, who previously worked together on the 2019 comedy-drama The Planters. They are producing the project through their respective companies, Thank You So Much and Fire Tiger Films. Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park International has acquired the film’s international sales rights ahead of the American Film Market.
Featuring Pegg, Duplass, and Osment, My Phone Died unites actors recognized for their work in both comedy and drama. A release date for the project has not yet been announced.
