Hulu has added an acclaimed spy thriller, starring Michael Fassbender, to its streaming library. Black Bag is streaming on Hulu starting today, November 2, 2026. The spy thriller, directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by David Koepp, was released in theaters on March 14, 2025.
Steven Soderbergh is an Academy Award-winning director renowned for his work on critically acclaimed films such as Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Contagion, and the Ocean’s trilogy. Most recently, he joined the creative team of The Batman: Part II to assist in directing the film after Matt Reeves took an indefinite hiatus for personal reasons.
What is Michael Fassbender’s Black Bag movie about?
Black Bag follows George Woodhouse, a counterintelligence officer with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). He has been assigned to investigate the leak of a top-secret software program known as Severus. Among the five suspects is his wife, Kathryn, who is also an intelligence officer. As George delves deeper into the investigation, he finds himself caught between his loyalty to his wife and his duty to his country.
The movie stars Cate Blanchett as Kathryn St. Jean and Michael Fassbender as George T. Woodhouse. Other notable cast members include Marisa Abela, Tom Burke, Naomie Harris, Regé-Jean Page, Pierce Brosnan, Gustaf Skarsgård, Kae Alexander, and Ambika Mod.
Black Bag received widespread critical acclaim upon its release. The movie currently holds a 96% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 292 reviews. Despite the positive response, the film was a box-office disappointment, grossing $43.4 million worldwide against a $50–60 million budget.
Director Soderbergh later expressed his frustration over Black Bag’s underperformance at the box office. He told The Independent, “This is the kind of film I made my career on. And if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age of 25 years old to come out to theatres – if that’s truly a dead zone – then that’s not a good thing for movies. What’s gonna happen to the person behind me who wants to make this kind of film?”
Soderbergh’s most recent project was the documentary film John Lennon: The Last Interview, which premiered at Cannes earlier this year.
