After receiving significant praise for Obsession, Curry Barker is ready for more. Just ahead of Halloween, Barker released a new horror short for fans.
The 27-year-old filmmaker collaborated with Windows on his latest project, Mama Bear. The short is available to watch for free on YouTube. Barker wrote, directed, and edited the horror project. The short also reunites Barker with Obsession production designer Vivian Gray.
Jon Lee Richardson leads the cast as Floyd, the central character of the story. Katie Sarife plays Lacey, while Ericka Kreuz portrays Ms. Wilson. Shopgirl star and Angela Kingsley’s husband, Joshua Snyder, takes on the important role of Floyd’s doppelgänger.
What makes Curry Barker’s latest horror movie stand out?
The title Mama Bear has prompted speculation that the short could be connected to Obsession, whose protagonist is named Bear. However, no official connection has been confirmed. The short’s plot was kept under wraps before its premiere, although the cast list identifies Richardson’s character as Floyd.
Mama Bear is a psychological horror that will mimic the eerie atmosphere that fans got to witness in Obsession. Although there’s no direct connection between the film and Barker’s previous hit, the film’s terrifying visuals remind viewers of the intense, frightening final scene of Obsession.
Barker worked with Microsoft Windows to create the film. The collaboration brings a Windows-sponsored project to Barker’s established short-film format. The collaboration also helped give the film polished visuals and impressive visual effects. A group of internet creators, Corridor Crew, helped Barker to construct the visuals.
Obsession earned a worldwide box office collection of $521 million with a production budget of about $1 million, according to The Numbers. Following such a huge success, the filmmaker is returning to his indie roots with Mama Bear.
Barker’s next feature, Anything But Ghosts, is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
