A deadly predator and a group of tourists trapped in a desperate battle to stay alive have helped an under-the-radar horror film gain traction on Prime Video. Despite receiving little promotional attention, the movie has overtaken several higher-profile releases on the platform.
Hungry is beating all other movies on Prime Video
The streaming winner is Hungry, a creature feature that puts a rampaging hippopotamus at the center of its mayhem. According to FlixPatrol‘s streaming rankings, the movie has claimed the No. 1 spot among films on Prime Video in the United States. It sits ahead of Love of Your Life, Masterplan, First Winter, and more. The film is placed at no. 3 on the Top 10 Overall list for Prime Video, behind The Terminal List and Carrie.
James Nunn has written and directed the survival thriller, taking a group of vacationers deep into Louisiana’s wetlands before their trip spirals into a nightmare. Their riverboat outing takes a deadly turn when they come face-to-face with an aggressive hippo, forcing them to fight for their lives. The cast features Madison Davenport, Tracey Bonner, Joaquim de Almeida, Michel Curiel, Samantha Coughlan and Olivia Bernstone, with Jim Meskimen and River Codack also appearing.
Signature Entertainment backed the British survival thriller, with Ben Jacques overseeing production and Aura Entertainment managing its release. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 52% critics’ rating and a 33% audience score, while IMDb users have rated the film 4.9 out of 10.
The film earns some credit for choosing a different predator, replacing familiar shark and crocodile with a hostile, territorial hippo in Louisiana’s bayou. However, according to some viewers, the story loses momentum midway through.
Extended stretches of characters waiting around or struggling to stay afloat leave viewers wanting more action. Some horror fans also criticized the film for playing it too safe, with little graphic violence and several deaths that happen off-screen.
