Elmo has a new look for this spooky season: Miranda Priestly in a hilarious The Devil Wears Prada costume! Sesame Street’s beloved furry red monster chose to dress up as the fashion magazine editor-in-chief-from-hell, who was perfectly portrayed by Oscar-winner Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada film series.
In the clip shared by Sesame Workshop, an excited Elmo says, “It’s almost Halloween! Oh, Elmo better get into this costume. Guess who Elmo is!” Then, in a twirl, the fan-favorite character transformed into Priestly, complete with her iconic high-fashion smart suit, a signature short white wig, and notable arched specs dangling right on the edge of his nose.
A sentient pumpkin then strolled in front of Elmo, making him quipp in character as Priestly. He said, “Pumpkins? For fall? How groundbreaking.” Then Cookie Monster appeared, prompting Elmo to snark about his blue fur color. Elmo said, “Well, it’s not cerulean. But it works.” To this, Cookie Monster responded: “Uh, thanks? Me think?”
Then, in perfect Miranda Priestly fashion, Elmo delivered one last savage, deadpan wish to the viewers: “Happy Halloween. That’s all.”
The Devil Wears Prada connection makes Elmo’s costume even more unexpected
The Devil Wears Prada connection makes Elmo’s outfit even more unexpected. In past years, the character has dressed up as different characters for Halloween for multiple Sesame Street segments, including as Galactic Stan, as well as a pirate and a witch.
His latest look has garnered sincere thoughts and opinions from many fans worldwide, who are chiming in with their appreciation for Elmo’s costume choice and how it appeals to both children and adults alike, tastefully. “I love the little bits of extra content they do that is clearly appropriate enough to show a kid but aimed at us adults,” one user wrote on Reddit. “And it’s adorable and fun. Like this.”
Some fans also got confused about Elmo’s look, confusing him with figures like Albert Einstein and George Washington. Some even hilariously remarked that he looked like Nigel trying on Priestly’s white wig.
