Jamie Dornan has acknowledged the pressure of playing Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, taking over a role closely associated with Viggo Mortensen’s performance in the original trilogy. Although Dornan feels honored to portray the younger version of the iconic hero, he admitted that matching the legacy of Mortensen’s portrayal comes with its challenges.
Jamie Dornan addresses replacing Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn
In an interview with L’Officiel, translated by Slash Film, Dornan opened up about stepping into the role and following in Mortensen’s footsteps. He acknowledged the expectations surrounding the character while making it clear that he has no intention of surpassing the original performance.
Dornan said, “There’s pressure when you’re trying to follow in those footsteps. I’ve been asked to play a super iconic role, and I’ll do my best. But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo. His performance is one of my all-time favorites, and I feel honored to try to recapture at least some of the energy he originally brought to the character. There’s no part of me that’s trying to outdo him.”
Meanwhile, the upcoming standalone film will be directed by Andy Serkis, who also stars in the project. Serkis previously brought Gollum to life through voice acting and motion capture in the original trilogy. His directing credits include Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. He also served as second unit director on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. The Hunt for Gollum was his first time directing a main entry in the fantasy franchise.
The film will also reunite audiences with Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, Lee Pace and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Unlike the original trilogy, The Hunt for Gollum will tell its story from Gollum’s perspective. The plot follows Gandalf as he sends a younger Aragorn to track down the corrupted hobbit. Before becoming the heir to Gondor’s throne, Aragorn lives as a solitary hunter known as Strider, a side of the character the prequel will explore.
