Katie Zacharia’s brief stint as a White House spokesperson ended almost as quickly as it began, leaving her to deal with public ridicule and an abrupt career change. The former Donald Trump aide has now shared what the president told her after her dismissal, while defending the loyalty and integrity she says carried her through the ordeal.
Katie Zacharia describes her dismissal and Trump’s reported parting words
Katie Zacharia said Trump offered a blunt assessment of her career prospects when he decided to fire her just after just five days. According to her account to the California Post, he told her, “You know, there are other ways to make a living.” She remains committed to the president and has hinted that she will announce her next professional move soon.
Zacharia’s time in the role ended soon after a rocky 14-minute briefing drew attention to her verbal slips, including an apparent mix-up involving her husband and the president. The next day, Fox News personality Sean Hannity raised doubts about her legal credentials and pushed back against her claim that White House staff had not adequately prepared her. Her dismissal followed not long after.
Speaking from her home, Zacharia described the timing as particularly painful, coming after her son’s birthday and a dinner with Vice President JD Vance. Still, she said the experience gave her children a lesson in standing by their principles when public opinion “turns against you.” She said remaining loyal and true to herself mattered more than the embarrassment of becoming an “international meme.”
Zacharia has also argued that she never received a fair opportunity to succeed. She said staff provided just “a few hours” of briefing material on the morning of her debut. Former press secretaries Kayleigh McEnany, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Ari Fleischer and Sean Spicer reportedly reached out with sympathy over the limited preparation time.
