David Bowie’s immersive concert experience premieres in Berlin
Titled Stage, the experience comes from Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Brett Morgen, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. He previously directed Moonage Daydream, the acclaimed 2022 documentary about Bowie. Morgen discovered the original concert footage while researching that film.
The footage captures Bowie performing during his Isolar II World Tour in 1978. The tour featured material from Heroes, the landmark album he recorded while living in Berlin. The archival recordings will form the centerpiece of the immersive production.
Unlike a traditional concert film, Stages will use a three-screen presentation. Large-scale projections will combine with transparent LED screens and an elaborate lighting design. The setup aims to immerse audiences in Bowie’s live performance.
Lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe is overseeing the production’s visual elements. His previous work includes tours for ABBA, The Police, Adele, and Michael Jackson. Paul Massey, an Oscar-winning sound mixer, created a special mix for the experience.
Morgen developed the project in cooperation with the David Bowie Estate. The collaboration builds on Morgen’s earlier documentary work about Bowie. Bowie died in 2016 at the age of 69.
The David Bowie immersive concert will premiere at Berlin’s Uber Arena on February 14, 2027. The date falls during the opening weekend of the Berlinale. The 77th Berlin International Film Festival runs from February 10 through February 21.
Festival director Tricia Tuttle described the premiere as “a dream come true.” She highlighted Berlin’s close connection to Bowie and the festival’s commitment to new storytelling formats. “The Berlinale is a place where cinema, art, and new forms of storytelling intersect,” she said.
Morgen will also participate in the European Film Market’s talks program. His previous documentaries include Cobain: Montage of Heck, Jane, and The Kid Stays in the Picture. With Stage, he brings audiences back to Bowie’s concert era through restored footage and immersive technology.
