Walton Goggins is stepping into the role of Ebenezer Scrooge for a new Christmas adventure with the Muppets. The Fallout actor joins Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, and Rizzo the Rat in Walmart’s latest holiday commercial. The campaign revisits a beloved Christmas classic with musical performances, familiar characters, and plenty of Muppet mischief.
The commercial, titled A Who Knew Carol, serves as a mini-sequel to the 1992 film The Muppet Christmas Carol, originally starring Michael Caine as Scrooge. Walmart collaborated with Disney and The Muppets Studio on the campaign. It brings the characters back together while incorporating the retailer into their festive story.
Walmart gives The Muppet Christmas Carol a very unexpected holiday twist
Gonzo opens the commercial by announcing, “Welcome to a whole new Christmas Carol!” He mentions Walmart before Rizzo interrupts with a joke about the retailer’s absence from the original story. Rizzo then jokes that he hopes Scrooge will not appear in this version.
Kermit and Miss Piggy soon lead a musical number warning the other characters about Scrooge’s return. “He’s back here again, so warn all of your friends,” they sing. Fozzie Bear adds to the warning: “Keep away from Mr. Scrooge!”
The commercial also introduces Pepé the King Prawn to the Christmas Carol universe. Since the character didn’t appear in the original film, his arrival adds another meta joke to the story. “It’s called giving the people what they want, okay?” Pepé says while acknowledging his debut.
Near the end, Gonzo and Rizzo sit on a windowsill overlooking the town. Rizzo realizes that Scrooge didn’t deliver his famous catchphrase during the commercial. Goggins then flings open the shutters, knocking the pair off the windowsill before shouting, “Bah humbug!” at the townspeople below.
Through its returning characters, musical sequences, and playful dialogue, A Who Knew Carol revisits the spirit of The Muppet Christmas Carol while giving Walmart’s holiday campaign a nostalgic twist.
