Zohran Mamdani faced an awkward moment while casting his ballot on the first day of NYC early voting. A voter at the Metropolitan Museum of Art accused the New York City mayor of moving ahead of him in line. Video from the polling site captured the man repeatedly objecting as Mamdani headed toward a voting booth. The mayor later offered a different explanation when reporters asked him about the exchange.
The mayor addresses a dispute at an NYC polling site
The dispute unfolded Saturday morning as Mamdani arrived at the Met to vote. In footage shared online, a man complained as the mayor walked toward a booth.
“Why’s he gotta cut me?” the voter said, according to LiveMint.
The man continued protesting while Mamdani voted. “The mayor just cut me, you saw it,” he told someone accompanying the mayor. He later added, “He cut me, you all saw it.”
However, the footage does not establish whether officials directed Mamdani toward an available booth. It also does not show everything that happened before the exchange.
After voting, a reporter directly asked Mamdani whether he had cut ahead. The mayor laughed before offering his explanation.
“He wanted to wait for … there were two open, he wanted this one,” Mamdani said. His response suggested the disagreement involved two available booths rather than an attempt to bypass the entire line.
Fox News also published video of the incident and described Mamdani as appearing to move ahead of the voter.
The mayor had arrived with doughnuts for poll workers and encouraged New Yorkers to vote early. He also joked afterward that he had been called a “communist” only once during the visit.
The polling-site dispute comes during another high-profile stretch for Mamdani. He recently discussed his working relationship with Donald Trump, saying their conversations often focus on issues affecting New York City.
Mamdani has also continued balancing those talks with major disagreements over federal policy, including his opposition to Trump’s approach to ICE.
For now, the video shows a frustrated voter and Mamdani offering different views of what happened. It does not independently establish that the mayor intentionally skipped the line.
