Jon Bon Jovi revealed how severely his vocal cord problems once affected his ability to sing. At the most difficult point of his recovery, the rocker said he could not even make it through “Happy Birthday.”
The Bon Jovi frontman underwent vocal cord medialization surgery in 2022 after dealing with a damaged cord. Although he eventually regained his voice, he said the recovery lasted far longer than he initially expected.
Jon Bon Jovi reveals he couldn’t sing ‘Happy Birthday’ due to vocal cord issues
Bon Jovi discussed his recovery during an October 20 interview with A Current Affair. He said progress came slowly after surgery, though he never completely lost faith that his voice would return.
“I couldn’t sing ‘Happy Birthday,’” he recalled while describing how limited his voice had become.
The singer admitted that knowing the process would take four years might have made him question whether he wanted to continue. Instead, he kept working with vocal coaches and regularly exercised his voice.
Those efforts eventually paid off. Bon Jovi said his voice now sounded “phenomenal” and that he could perform without a problem. However, he refused to return to touring before he believed he could meet the standard the band had maintained throughout its career.
He said promoters presented him with possible tours during his recovery, but he repeatedly turned them down. Bon Jovi did not want to rely on audiences to sing parts that he could no longer comfortably perform himself.
The Jon Bon Jovi vocal issues had already made performing stressful before surgery. He recalled struggling through shows in 2019 and 2022 while constantly questioning whether he could hit each note correctly.
His wife, Dorothea, also gave him a candid assessment after one performance in Nashville. Bon Jovi remembered telling her that he thought the show had gone well, only for her to disagree.
Eventually, he reached the point where singing no longer required that constant mental effort. He said his goal was to regain enough control to choose songs from any of Bon Jovi’s 18 albums without worrying about whether his voice could handle them.
The band later returned to the stage, and Bon Jovi said performing had once again become joyful. Following shows in the U.K., Ireland and a Madison Square Garden residency, the group announced seven additional Forever Tour dates beginning next March.
According to PEOPLE, Bon Jovi credited his bandmates for standing by him throughout the lengthy recovery and said they never doubted his ability to return. Their support helped him work his way back to performing with confidence after years of uncertainty about his voice.
