Donald Trump Says Google CEO Refused His Idea to Rename the Atlantic Ocean

Donald Trump has once again attracted attention with his remarks, this time over a proposed name change for the Atlantic Ocean. The president recently claimed that he discussed the proposal with Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The president claims Pichai rejected his proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean.

Why Sundar Pichai reportedly objected to the proposal

According to the Washington Post, Trump said on Wednesday that he had called Google CEO Sundar Pichai to discuss renaming the Atlantic Ocean. However, Trump claimed Pichai rejected the proposal because oceans border multiple countries.

According to the president, Pichai responded, “No, no, no. This time, I’m not doing it. Please don’t ask us to do that.”

According to Trump, the Google CEO explained that oceans are different because they border numerous countries. Trump said he would probably abandon the proposal following his reported conversation with Pichai. However, the tech giant has yet to confirm whether any such conversation took place between the president and Pichai.

Trump concluded, “I think let’s keep it the Atlantic Ocean, right? Pacific Ocean. We’re going to call it the American Ocean.”

For context, Sundar Pichai and Donald Trump know each other professionally and have met face-to-face several times. Their notable meetings include a September 2026 AI summit at the White House. During the event, Trump met with major tech leaders, including Pichai, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg, to discuss artificial intelligence.

During the meeting, he praised Pichai’s success and jokingly called him a “monster,” referring to his influence in the tech industry. The Google CEO also met Trump at the White House in March 2019, during his first presidential term. Additionally, Pichai attended a technology roundtable hosted by the Trump administration in December 2018 alongside other industry leaders.
