Sam Heughan has earned a place in a beloved EGOT winner’s latest Paramount+ project. The Outlander star has reportedly found his next TV project in the form of Viola Davis‘ highly anticipated upcoming thriller series Ascent.
As reported by Deadline, Heughan will star as Conal opposite Davis, who plays Catriona. It is being created by John Logan and produced by Paramount Television Studios. Logan is a writer-producer, known for masterpieces like Skyfall, Gladiator, Penny Dreadful, and the recent Michael Jackson film Michael.
Ascent will notably mark Heughan’s next big project after coming hot off the eighth and final season of Outlander, a show for which he previously earned BAFTA Scotland and Critics’ Choice Award nominations. He is also set to next appear in MGM+’s political thriller Embassy, cast alongside J.K. Simmons and Anna Kendrick.
What to know about Viola Davis’ new thriller TV show Ascent
Set in the world of global corporate crisis and damage control, this upcoming series for Paramount+ is billed as a forthcoming character-driven thriller series.
In Ascent, Sam Heughan has been cast as Conal, a top agent at Ascent Ventures. Per the outlet, “A lethally charming and natural chameleon, Conal uses social cunning and ruthlessness to get the job done, and he always gets a thrill out of completing a mission.”
Viola Davis, meanwhile, is set to star as Catriona, an elite corporate fixer, in the series. She is tasked with weaponizing “the ruthless skills that have made her indispensable to billion-dollar clients when her estranged daughter is in danger.”
EGOT winner Davis and Julius Tennon are executive producing the show via JuVee Productions, alongside Michael Aguilar (known for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and Kidding). Production on Ascent is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in 2027, with a premiere expected in late 2027 or 2028.
