Ryan Murphy’s long-anticipated Glee reboot has now found a home on two major streaming services. A revival of the musical comedy series has been in the works for over a month, following the original show’s ending in 2015. In a new report, it has been confirmed that the Glee reboot has been ordered at Disney+ and Hulu.
The news comes from Variety, although the report reaffirms that no casting information or story details have been revealed. However, Murphy had previously said that he had “just finished” writing a script for the reboot. At the time, Murphy said that he was in touch with “around 10 of the original cast members” for the revival. 20th Television will produce the Glee reboot.
How Glee became a cultural phenomenon through its music and storylines
Glee premiered on Fox in 2009, and its success spawned several seasons. The show followed a group of high school students in a glee club set within the fictional William McKinley High School in Ohio. Over the course of six seasons, it earned six Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe wins. Featuring various original songs and popular covers, its music averages 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Glee’s success also led to its cast embarking on live concert tours as well as the production of the reality series, The Glee Project. In 2011, a concert film titled Glee: The Concert Movie got a limited theatrical release in the country. The show’s original cast included Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Dianna Agron, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, and more.
Several of its cast members have passed away since the show premiered. However, many cast members have expressed enthusiasm for reprising their roles in a reboot.
The Glee reboot currently doesn’t have a release date.
