Roseanne Barr is moving ahead with her latest television project without one of the most familiar faces from her past. The actress has revealed that John Goodman declined an invitation to join her new sitcom, which she is producing independently. Goodman and Barr previously starred together on the hit sitcom Roseanne.
Roseanne reveals John Goodman declined an invitation to join her latest project
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barr is currently working on Meemaw: A Modern Day Fable, a self-financed single-camera sitcom loosely inspired by her life in Texas Hill Country. The project features Barr as the matriarch of a mixed-race family and also includes Drea de Matteo, Omar Gooding, and Randy Quaid.
While speaking about her new project, Barr revealed that she had reached out to Goodman about appearing in the series, but the actor did not accept the invitation. The decision means the two actors will not be sharing the screen again in her latest television venture.
Goodman and Barr became closely associated through Roseanne, which originally ran from 1988 to 1997. The sitcom followed the working-class Conner family and became one of the biggest television hits of its time, with Barr at the centre as Roseanne Conner and Goodman playing her husband, Dan.
The pair later returned to their well-known roles when Roseanne was revived in 2018. However, the revival ended after ABC cancelled the series following an offensive tweet by Barr about former Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. The network later reworked the show as The Conners, with Barr’s character being killed off.
Now, Barr is taking a different approach with Meemaw: A Modern Day Fable. Rather than returning to a major network, she has financed the sitcom herself and is looking for distributors for the project.
For Barr, the new project marks an attempt to return to television on her own terms. However, with Goodman choosing not to take part, fans of the original Roseanne will not see the former on-screen couple reunite in Meemaw.
