Selena Gomez Opens Up About a ‘Really Hard’ Addiction She’s Finally Overcome

Selena Gomez is warning fans about an addiction she has personally struggled with. The singer and actress also shared her excitement about finally quitting it.

On Sunday, Gomez posted a deeply personal video message on her Instagram Story. “I’m not going to be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot,” she shared. “Just so everyone knows, that’s somewhat vaped; nicotine is so hard to quit. And I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or even if you’re trying to vape, it’s just not worth it.”

In the video message, Gomez called vaping “so stupid,” revealing that it changed her voice. “So if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind, just don’t listen,” she added.

The “People You Know” singer added, “But I am really excited because I stopped [vaping] and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too.”

This isn’t the first time Gomez has addressed changes in her voice. In December 2025, the Only Murders in the Building star revealed that occasional swelling in her throat had contributed to the change in her vocals. “I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all. That’s good,” she said during an Instagram Live.

In addition to her struggle with addiction and vocal changes, Gomez has also been candid about other health issues she has faced in the past. During an episode of Apple TV+’s 2023 series Dear…, the singer discussed the side effects from the medication she took for her lupus treatment.

“My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications,” she said during the conversation. “And obviously, people just ran with it… It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus.”

Meanwhile, on the career front, Gomez recently joined Timothée Chalamet as the main voice cast for Not Alone, an upcoming romantic science fiction comedy film. She is also set to return as Mabel in Only Murders in the Building Season 6, which arrives on December 8.
