Peter Jackson Reveals Movie Sequel He’ll Direct Next & It’s Not LOTR

Peter Jackson has dropped a new update on his next project. The filmmaker is planning to revisit one of his most beloved releases from over a decade ago with a long-awaited sequel.

Jackson recently received the 2026 Honorary Grand Prize at the Sitges Film Festival. During the event, he confirmed that he and Fran Walsh, his wife and longtime collaborator, have already written the script for the much-awaited sequel to The Adventures of Tintin. The director further declared, “That will be the next film I make.”

Steven Spielberg directed The Adventures of Tintin, which arrived in theaters in 2011, while Jackson served as a producer. However, the upcoming sequel will be helmed entirely by Jackson himself. “The deal was Steven [Spielberg] directs one, and I direct another,” the Lord of the Rings director told Deadline at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

The Spielberg collaboration that was supposed to lead to a sequel

There had been several previous attempts to develop a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin since its 2011 release. Originally, the proposed sequel was to adapt Hergé’s The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun from the Tintin comic series. However, the idea was eventually scrapped.

Following multiple updates and plans, screenwriter Anthony Horowitz revealed that the script he had written for Tintin 2 had been dropped.

In March 2018, Spielberg assured fans that a sequel was still happening. “Peter Jackson has to do the second part. Normally, if all goes well, he will soon start working on the script. As it takes two years of animation work on the film, for you, I would not expect to see it for about three years. But Peter will stick to it. Tintin is not dead!” he said at the time (via Premiere).

Two years later, Jamie Bell, who played the titular character in the first Tintin film, also expressed interest in reprising the role. Now that Jackson has confirmed that the sequel is in development, casting and plot details remain under wraps.
