Kristi Noem’s Envoy Role Is Over, but She Hasn’t Left Donald Trump’s Team

Kristi Noem’s role as a special envoy has ended, but she continues to serve in Donald Trump’s administration in a new job. The former Homeland Security secretary has taken up a position at the State Department. She will work as a senior adviser while continuing to handle matters related to the Shield of the Americas initiative.

Kristi Noem will continue working in the Trump administration in a different capacity following the end of her special envoy appointment.

She has moved into a senior adviser position at the State Department, where her responsibilities will still include the Shield of the Americas initiative, according to CNN. “I’m proud to continue working with President Trump and advancing his America First agenda,” she noted.

Noem’s six-month stint as special envoy concluded last month. She will now advise Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, having previously worked under him in her former position. Noem also addressed the appointment’s conclusion on X on Friday, explaining that the role had been designed to last six months.

The State Department position follows Noem’s removal as Homeland Security secretary in March. During her tenure, the department faced pressure from the White House over its implementation of Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda.

CNN had previously reported that the department’s enforcement methods had also created tensions within the agency. A separate controversy involving a government advertising campaign contributed to the circumstances surrounding Noem’s exit.

Previously, Trump announced that Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin would take over the Homeland Security position. He later publicly acknowledged Noem’s work at a Shield of the Americas meeting during the United Nations General Assembly, thanking her for what he called a “really terrific job.”

Before joining the second Trump administration, Noem served as governor of South Dakota.
