Former President Barack Obama broke his silence on the Trump administration’s escalating actions against Rep. Ilhan Omar. Obama issued a pointed warning about what the investigation could mean for American democracy.
Barack Obama condemns the investigation into Ilhan Omar’s citizenship
Former President Barack Obama sharply criticized the Trump administration’s investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar’s immigration status. Obama accused the government of selectively targeting Omar because of her political beliefs and public criticism of President Donald Trump.
“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota,” Obama wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in a post viewed over two million times.
The statement came after Homeland Security Investigations conducted a dawn raid on Omar’s Washington, D.C.-area home on Monday. The raid was connected to an investigation concerning her immigration paperwork. Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, vehemently denies any wrongdoing (via The Daily Beast).
Obama directly accused the administration of using federal power to intimidate a political opponent. “The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,” he wrote.
He also referenced the Justice Department’s unsuccessful efforts to bring charges against other Trump adversaries, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The former president warned that such conduct sets a dangerous precedent for future administrations. “The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans,” Obama wrote. He added that “if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her.”
During Trump’s first term, immigration authorities previously reviewed Omar’s records and found no wrongdoing or fraud. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about Obama’s statement.
