Michael Che is sparking speculation with his reaction to Shane Gillis’s controversial Saturday Night Live (SNL) monologue. The Weekend Update co-anchor shared a sarcastic message on Instagram after facing questions about the controversy during an appearance on Today.
Michael Che addresses Shane Gillis’ SNL monologue backlash in sarcastic Instagram post
According to E! News, Che shared a carousel-style text post on Instagram on Oct. 16. The message addressed his response to Gillis’ monologue.
“folks, I just want to make one thing abundantly clear,” Che began. “i did NOT laugh. also, i NEVER laugh. NONE of this s**t is funny to me.”
He continued with another sarcastic explanation: “i haven’t laughed at comedy in about 11yrs, ever since i figured out how to do it. even if it looks like im laughing, im not really laughing. im just being polite.”
The 43-year-old appeared on Today on Oct. 15 and faced questions about the controversy. Host Laura Jarrett asked for his response to Gillis’ joke criticizing women who wear spandex shorts at the gym. Gillis had reportedly said women “just dress like wh**res now.” Che initially avoided addressing the joke directly.
“That’s comedy,” he said, explaining, “It’s like, you think it’s funny and some people don’t.”
In the post, Che also addressed accusations that he dislikes women. “please. stop saying i hate women,” he wrote. “i only hate like 6 of them. (and THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DID!) the other 4,049,999,996 is alright with me!”
He ended with his own comments about women’s clothing. “wear whatever the f**k you want,” Che wrote. “squat nekkid.”
Che is not the only one weighing in on the controversy. Schitt’s Creek actor Dan Levy criticized Gillis’s joke, saying he was left “speechless” that it had made it to air.
“Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them wh**es,” Levy said in a video. “It makes the men calling them wh**es misogynists. There’s a difference there.”
