Jenny McCarthy recalled a troubling shift in Katie Holmes during her marriage to Tom Cruise, describing the actress as looking increasingly uncomfortable. The comedian’s memories included an unusual wedding speech, tense encounters involving Scientology and an unsettling moment with the couple’s daughter, Suri.
McCarthy had known the former couple socially while dating Jim Carrey, giving her a firsthand view of their high-profile circle. Years later, she revisited those encounters and shared why certain moments left her deeply unsettled.
Jenny McCarthy describes Katie Holmes as looking like a “deer in headlights” during the marriage
During an episode of The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show, McCarthy recalled checking on Holmes at social gatherings. “At that time, she looked like a deer in headlights. This was well into the marriage,” she claimed. McCarthy added that Holmes seemed like herself around the time of the 2006 wedding, but something changed afterward.
She also described the contrasting speeches at the wedding. Holmes’ maid of honor reminisced about high school parties, beers and sleepovers, which McCarthy called “very Midwest” and “adorable.” Cruise chose Scientology leader David Miscavige as his best man. Miscavige reportedly delivered a lengthy speech portraying the newlyweds as an exceptionally powerful celebrity couple.
McCarthy said Miscavige spoke for about 30 minutes. She recalled watching guests react with confusion, particularly Holmes’ relatives. Even Holmes appeared to be “trying to smile her way through it,” McCarthy claimed.
The comedian also described an uncomfortable encounter at the rehearsal dinner. When she asked to hold newborn Suri, she said everyone in the room stared at her. McCarthy compared the moment to Rosemary’s Baby and described the reaction as the “Scientology stare.” After returning the baby, she remembered thinking she was “in the belly of the beast.” She added, “I’ve never been so scared in my life.”
McCarthy also recalled Cruise trying to persuade her and Carrey to join Scientology. Although she called Cruise a “very nice human being,” she said he seemed “programmed.” According to the outlet, representatives for Cruise and Holmes did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Holmes filed for divorce in 2012 and left the church. Reports linked her decision partly to concerns about Suri’s upbringing. Suri, now 20, has remained estranged from her father and legally dropped his surname in July.
