During the Season 11 premiere of Love Is Blind, Nick Lachey spoke with contestant Erika Ellis in the women’s lounge alongside his wife and co-host, Vanessa Lachey. Ellis opened up about her previous marriage. She said that she had struggled with knowing when to reveal that history while dating.
As per a report by PageSix, Lachey related to her experience. He said, “Well, as some of you may know, I was previously married before I met my incredible wife.”
The 98 Degrees singer then offered an unexpected perspective on his previous marriage to Simpson. “I would make the very unique argument that it gives you a leg up because you know from that experience what it is you truly want,” he explained.
Vanessa also reassured Ellis that having a previous marriage was nothing to be ashamed of. “We all have messy pasts, all of us,” she said.
Lachey married Simpson in 2002, and they divorced in 2006. The former couple famously documented their relationship on the MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. It aired from 2003 to 2005. Their marriage eventually ended in divorce, but Lachey has previously acknowledged that the experience left emotional scars.
While appearing on Season 3 of Netflix’s The Ultimatum in 2024, Lachey opened up about the pain he experienced following his divorce. “I, too, was previously married, divorced, so I understand the hurt, the scars that exist from that,” he said at the time.
He also encouraged a contestant not to allow a failed relationship to determine their future. “Don’t let your past define your future,” Lachey said. He added that maintaining his belief in marriage and family ultimately allowed him to build the life he has with Vanessa.
Lachey married Vanessa in 2011, and the couple now shares three children. The pair have also continued working together as reality TV hosts. They have also co-hosted Love Is Blind since its debut and appeared together on other Netflix dating shows.
The latest comments come months after Lachey and Simpson unexpectedly crossed paths on a flight to Hawaii. Lachey later described the encounter as “strangely OK,” explaining that they had not seen each other in nearly 20 years. He said everyone was “very, very cordial” and “very respectful” during the six-and-a-half-hour flight.
