Gemma Chan of “Crazy Rich Asians” fame has addressed speculation about her return to an upcoming HBO series based on the movie. However, the actress who played Astrid was absent from the recently announced cast list.
Gemma Chan addresses her potential return as Astrid in the Crazy Rich Asians HBO series
Gemma Chan is open to returning to the world of Crazy Rich Asians. The actress hinted at her possible involvement in the HBO sequel series while attending a screening of her film Josephine at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival.
Speaking to Film Updates, Chan stopped short of confirming her return. She said, “I love Crazy Rich Asians, I love the people involved. Astrid has such a special place in my heart so I hope so. I can’t say any more than that for now.”
Her comments come after Chan and Harry Shum Jr. were left off the recently announced cast list. Fans have since questioned whether the two could still appear in the sequel series.
The speculation has grown because Astrid and Shum’s character, Charlie Wu, were central to one of the original film’s unresolved romantic storylines. Their relationship has remained a fan-favorite part of the story.
In 2022, reports revealed that a spinoff movie focusing on Astrid and Charlie’s unresolved romance was in development. That history has added further interest to whether the HBO series could revisit their storyline.
Discussions surrounding the series have also raised questions about whether Chan and Shum will return and provide closure to their characters’ story from the 2018 movie.
Crazy Rich Asians is also heading to the stage. The Broadway musical will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who also directed the original film.
