Scarlett Johansson’s 2013 sci-fi thriller Under the Skin is now streaming for free on Tubi. The R-rated film runs 108 minutes and arrives just in time for Halloween. Tubi launched its Terror on Tubi hub this October, offering over 13,000 hours of horror content.
Jonathan Glazer directed the film and adapted it from Michel Faber’s novel of the same name. He also helmed Sexy Beast, Birth, and The Zone of Interest. Johansson plays an extraterrestrial organism that takes over a woman’s body on Earth.
The alien prowls the streets to lure unsuspecting men into a black void. The victims sink into the darkness and become sustenance for the creature. However, the alien grows too curious about humanity and begins questioning its own mission.
Glazer used hidden cameras and inexperienced actors throughout production. This technique gives the film an analog quality that contrasts with its surreal narrative elements. The movie avoids a typical narrative structure and does not feature conventionally likable characters.
Under the Skin struggled at the box office, earning only $7.2 million against a $13.3 million budget. Critics responded far more favorably, giving it an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score sits lower at 55%, reflecting the film’s divisive arthouse approach.
Tubi’s October catalog also features horror classics like From Dusk Till Dawn, The Faculty, and Pet Sematary. The platform offers both original programming and well-known genre titles. Other streamers have also added horror selections, with Netflix bringing in Crimson Peak, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Evil Dead (2013), and Psycho. Johansson, best known for playing Black Widow in the MCU, delivers one of her most unconventional performances in this unsettling film.
