The Weapons universe is officially moving forward with an encouraging production update for its highly anticipated Aunt Gladys prequel at Skydance.
The film was originally announced following the release of Zach Cregger’s movie last year, but Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. raised doubts about whether the project would move forward.
According to Deadline, script development on Gladys is proceeding smoothly, and it is awaiting a final draft. Following that, Skydance will begin its search for a director, confirming again that Cregger won’t return to helm it.
With its tentative release date, Gladys will arrive in theaters the month following Cregger’s next film, The Flood. Skydance Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein have been tasked with handling the upcoming theatrical titles developed by Warner Bros.
What else do we know about the Aunt Gladys Weapons prequel movie?
Cregger had initially planned to include Aunt Gladys’ origin story in Weapons but was removed during production. Following the box office success of Weapons, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema started exploring ideas for a prequel. The film, according to Cregger, will include “a lot of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things.”
Cregger has also said that he wants Amy Madigan to reprise the role. “It would be Amy. I’m not going to do a Young Gladys,” he said in a recent update.
The actress has also expressed an interest in returning for the prequel, after winning a Critics’ Choice Award and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role. The film holds an impressive 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming Cregger’s second-best-rated film.
Cregger most recently directed Resident Evil, which grossed over $250 million worldwide. His next film, The Flood, will be led by Jennifer Lawrence. No other casting information for Gladys has been revealed yet.
Gladys is scheduled to hit the theaters on September 8, 2028.
