A supernatural thriller show starring Josh Hartnett and Charlie Heaton arrives on Netflix today. As spooky season approaches, fans can look forward to seeing Hartnett and Stranger Things star Heaton on the streaming platform with Below.
A six-part miniseries, Below follows a remote coastal town haunted by a mysterious sea creature lurking beneath the water. Set in the remote, tight-knit fishing community of Snook’s Arm, Newfoundland, it follows locals as they face a looming vote to buy out their land.
Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a hard-bitten local fisherman fighting to protect his family and community, while Heaton joins him as Wade Penney, an eccentric community member. Jesse McKeown created the show, with Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver, and Stephen Dunn directing the episodes.
Mackenzie Davis also stars as Dr. Fonda Howander, a marine researcher who teams up with Calvin. Other cast members include Natasha Henstridge as Jan, Joshua Close as Jaxon, Rohan Campbell as Jay, Willow Kean as Ruth, Ruby Stokes as Mary, Kaleb Horn as Noah, and Mary Walsh as Linda.
How Below turns an isolated coastal town into the perfect setting for suspense
A perfectly paced thriller, Netflix‘s Below masterfully blends genres, turning an isolated coastal town into the perfect setting for suspense. It opens in 1986 in Newfoundland, where nine-year-old Calvin and his family relocate from Little Pot Rock to the slightly larger island of Snook’s Arm.
As they sit in a boat and tow their house, the journey that initially seems to go smoothly takes an unexpected turn after a mysterious incident. Calvin is forced to cut the tow between the boat and the house, leaving his father to drown. Forty years later, adult Calvin is still haunted by the event.
Present-day Calvin and his son Wade make a living by collecting ice for a local vodka brewery and running an Airbnb out of their home. But while Calvin is pleased to celebrate Come Home Year, things don’t go as smoothly as expected when the brewery rejects his latest ice haul because of its stench.
Not long after, he finds his son involved in a horrific accident. As Snook’s Cove residents start acting oddly, Calvin and Dr. Fonda Howander from the local science center soon realize something is wrong with the water.
As intriguing as that plot sounds, fans can now stream the horror series on Netflix.
