New Phantom of the Opera Movie Releasing in Theaters Next Year, But It’s Not What Fans Think

A new Phantom of the Opera adaptation is set to hit the theaters by next year, but there’s a catch. According to the latest reports, this rendition will differ significantly from fans’ expectations, as it will be a live recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

According to Deadline, Universal Pictures Content Group (UPCG), LW Entertainment, and Cameron Mackintosh have partnered to produce the project, which Brett Sullivan is set to direct for the screen. Dione Orrom will produce the live recording, while EVP of Universal Pictures Content Group Helen Parker will serve as Executive Producer.

Per the outlet, the production has announced the live recording, celebrating 40 years at His Majesty’s Theater on October 9 with what has been described as a “special gala performance.” The movie will notably capture the anniversary gala performance.

This adaptation is led by a star-studded ensemble, including Jordan Donica as The Phantom, Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé, Rhys Whitfield as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, Sierra Boggess as Carlotta, Matt Bateman as Piangi, Joseph Millson as Monsieur André, Ian Pirie as Monsieur Firmin, Joanna Riding as Madame Giry, and Millie Lyon as her daughter, Meg.

Phantom of the Opera has been adapted into a movie many times before

Since Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel was first published, The Phantom of the Opera has been adapted into numerous formats, including films, television specials, and stage productions.

This includes The Phantom of the Opera (1925), a classic silent horror film starring Lon Chaney as the Phantom, famous for its pioneering makeup and grand sets. Then came the titular 1943 film, a Technicolor Universal horror-romance starring Claude Rains as an acid-disfigured violinist.

Two decades later, another titular adaptation followed in 1962, a British Gothic horror film by Hammer Film Productions starring Herbert Lom. This was followed by the 1989 adaptation, a slasher-style horror film starring Robert Englund.

In the 2000s, two more adaptations followed. First, 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera was a lavish film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage musical, directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. Then there’s The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2011), a live-filmed 25th-anniversary stage production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical starring Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess.

This latest Phantom of the Opera adaptation is set to hit cinemas in 2027.
