Glen Powell Says Filming Judd Apatow’s New Movie Is a ‘Nightmare’ for This Reason

Glen Powell is used to arriving on set with every line and detail already mapped out. That routine has become harder while working with Judd Apatow on their upcoming comedy.

In his chat with Esquire, Powell explained that Apatow’s filmmaking process leaves little room for his usual preparation. He said, “For a guy like me, who likes to be prepared, it’s a nightmare.”

The actor prepares extensively, memorizing lines and researching roles before filming. Apatow’s approach is almost the opposite of Powell’s usual method. The script has a general direction, but scenes can change as the cameras roll. Apatow also tries different punchlines during takes, giving the actors little chance to rely on a fixed version of each scene.

Powell has become known for his detailed preparation on projects. He has previously memorized entire scripts rather than limiting his preparation to his own scenes. This makes Apatow’s unpredictable directing style a totally new experience for the actor.

What is Judd Apatow’s new movie with Glen Powell about?

The film is titled The Comeback King and follows a country western star in free fall. Powell leads the cast, with Cristin Milioti, Madelyn Cline, Stavros Halkias, and Li Jin Hao also starring.

The movie gives Powell a new challenge as a performer. During a conversation with Jelly Roll on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Powell revealed that he sings on screen for the first time in the film. He also credited his younger sister Leslie, who helped guide him through the vocal process and wrote music for the movie.

Apatow directs the Universal Pictures comedy, which he co-wrote with Powell. The project also expands Powell’s role behind the camera, as he serves as a producer alongside his acting and writing duties.

The Comeback King is scheduled to reach theaters on February 5, 2027.
